My family plays dominos...
a lot!

Anytime we have a birthday, holiday, relatives in town, or are just in the same house at one time, we play dominos. Game of choice is Mexican train. Dominos of choice are Double Twelves. Seat of choice is anywhere except next to my mom (Grandma is sweet on the outside, but shows no mercy at the domino table!). Round of choice is the "sixes". (Snacks come after the sixes!) Snack of choice varies by house.

Dominos is serious business in our family. We often run two tables concurrently to accommodate all the kids and grandkids that want to play. Then you move on to the winners or losers table. There is always a winner. The game doesn't stop without one. Bragging rights are highly prized in the family domino circle. There's a trophy that gets passed around, but it's only symbolic. Being able to say you won is what it's really about!

Everyone celebrates their victories (and loses) in their own unique ways. Most gloat. Others are humble and only bring it up when they are losing the next game! I have a sister-in-law that won once and now she rarely plays - consensus says that she is scared that her winning ways are fleeting and she doesn't want to face the reality of certain defeat! I think my mom wins the most. (Did I mention she's vicious at the domino table? We even drew numbers one night for seating arrangement so it was fair who sat next to her!)

My dad (Papa) keeps score. My nephew-in-law sings Black Sabbath. My inlaws have started a splinter group of domino action. My sister cringes when she has to leave a double open for her husband. There is yelling from table to table. There is commentary on play. There is tattling. There is head shaking and handwaving. There is always loud, ruckusy fun!

Yesterday we celebrated two family birthdays - Happy B-day Papa and Alan! Hamburgers were grilled, cakes were baked. Presents were open. And dominos were played. This weeks winner - well there's controversy! We changed up the routine and instead of a winners table, we played 4 rounds with everyone at the table. The scorecard says Michael was the big winner. My DH says technically it's him because he had the best score of everyone that was suppose to be at the winners table. I'm sure if we had played like we always do, my mom would have found her way on top!

So to my sweet daughter waiting in China... start focusing on numbers and colors. Learn how to grab the blocks. Smile sweetly and learn to laugh. Your future in our family depends on it! We can't wait to have you at the domino table.
